NEW BEGINNINGS: NEW LOOK NEW BOOK DAY II SHOOT: BY Labels Or Love

Down to the Wire: R2R team does it again with the Season 2 edition of Reel2Runway coming out we thought it would be cool to document the transformation of my going from short and chic to Long and Lovely. With my custom Hair pieces in hand I am feeling pretty good about what my new look will bring to will now be my new Book.

I hadn't shot in some time after taking almost a year off of modeling to solely focusing on recruiting for Reel2Runway. With the R2R team bigger and stronger than ever, we are shooting our TV premiere pilot episode to be called NEW LOOK... NEW BOOK. A concept that only members.

With my custom Hair Units ready to transform at the flip of a wig, I am feeling pretty good about what my new look will bring to will now be my new Book of the Fashion World would know just by title. But for my non-industry followers and viewers, its their chance to see that behind the the fancy pics is a whole process to reinventing a model's image; introducing a model's transformations to the world.

With The NLNB Project now under way, having assembled a series of great photoshoots and an awesome collection of creative teams, it is now time to get the new book (another word for new portfolio) to match. Starting last week with Erwyn Loewen's Lingerie shoot, we knew that one was a great start to what will be a hot New Book.

Shoot number 2 is care of Labels or Love: A high end, designer brands consignment store in the uptown side of Toronto's Avenue Road and Lawrence. Its a beautiful boutique branch that caters to the affluent customers in its area as well as Fashion stylists, the enthusiasts and Fashion lovers who still get a great Retail deal, coming from all over the Greater Toronto Area.

Owned and operated by Meytal Algranti, a well known stylist and fashion curator, Labels or Love has had a great three year run. Now moving with the tides, Meytal has decided that Online Retail is her next big move for this Fashion Haven.

Brigitta Kogut, my super awesome gal pal and photographer, decided to help out by casting me as the new online face of Labels or Love.

Along with the creative contributions of long time friends make up artist Antonio Hines (Bobby Brown Make Up at Holt's), assisted by Brandon Edward and Senior Hair stylist Paul Comrie of Paul Comrie Salon, the look could only be completed with the genius editorial styling

of Meytal and topped off with an amazing frames shot by Brigitta herself. It was a dream team of note.

Yes: the Verdict is in! My readers, BBM followers, Facebook followers have all spoken and Long hair Commercial Model Renee is the new direction I am taking for 2012.

I have been short for so long and I thought "time for a change." And surprisingly its growing on me. So I have tested out my look with a great photographer friend of mine Erwyn Loewen.

We did a lingerie shoot at his beautiful farm house and it was a surprising outcome. I haven't had long hair since I was 16 years old and I have never done lingerie so these were two new experiences for me.

Reel2Runway Loves Diem Magazine

Reel2Runway supports all its affiliates and team members. And one of Reel2Runway's own, Isabel Lee, team photographer, and her team of creative con padres has put together this wonderful project called Diem Magazine. Its the first Arts and Culture publication of Earl Haig Secondary School that is now launching after a year in progress. This online Magazine is available to purchase for print at $5.00 a pop. It explores the idea of interactive news about art and culture from freelance to well known writer and photographers who want to contribute. Much like social media gives a voice to all who seek it, so does this magazine.

Its so brilliant: It provides a platform for voices young and old to share their art and their news, their current events and things that their communities find important without the misguided information that day-to-day magazines often give with over editing and censorship.

The last day of fashion week was manic. I skipped Thursday altogether missing Bustle (my apologies to Sean and Ruth) as I was so sick and beyond exhausted. holding a handy cam and running back and forth to cover shows and be in shows is no easy feat.

I needed to be well rested for my Cydelic by Choryin show in the STUDIO Runway Room. This Collection was by far one of the most inspirational as no other designer, I thought, made Couture so Ready-to-Wear.

I was opening and closing the show which again should never be the case when a girl has no agency to even score a gig like that for her. But Choryin and I have been great buddies since we met earlier this year at his soft Launch at C- Lounge. I have always loved how much support his friends gave him and how much he has grown as a young designer now being housed by the biggest Fashion Production House and Factory in Canada, Seven Continents.

This Collection was inspired by Aliens and a hostel takeover of luxury bags that he also debuted in this collection. He opened the show with a fashion video that I had the pleasure of being featured in to demo key pieces of his collection in a Cydelic style that cannot be disputed.

The Pink Tartan Show was definitely a hot ticket this year. With the usual 2 hour wait for guest seating and the media rush to capture a shot of Kimberley Newport-Mimran, the President and Head Designer of Pink Tartan, smooching with her lovely husband and President and Creator of Joe Fresh Joe Mimran, this was a going to definitely be a bigger show than ever.

I wasn't supposed to even do Fashion Week, so when I decided to sniff out the Pink Tartan casting, I was sure it was going to be a long shot for me to get picked. After all, Pink Tartan is not only a hot ticket to watch, its one of the most prestigious shows for a Toronto model to walk in.

I thought, "what the heck, all they can do is say no, right?" as I walked into the head office on Bedford Street, Kim and her Stylist, Jairo Betancur, we sitting their and greeted me and all the models so warmly as we walked for them during the audition. When it came up to my turn, it took them a moment to realise it was even me with the blond hair and all. But of course, with a collection of wigs in hand always, and having worked with both Kim and Jairo for Escada, they knew I came prepared.

We bantered a bit about when I walked for her 5 years ago and how she always loved my walk. coming from Kim herself, this was the most amazing compliment a model can get, especially one like me who funny enough, cant get an agency. LOL! Needless to say, the agency deal was the least of their concern.

By the following week I was shooting video of the fitting and getting wiggy with it in my gorgeous orange number for the show.

After the show I bumped in the fabulous Jay Manuel while he was prepping for his second season of ATTITUDE by Jay Manuel for Sears. He was so crazy running back and forth talking to the L'oreal hair team and taking pictures and even surrounded by supermodels from all corners like: Heather Marks, Yasmin Warsame, and new to the Vlog scene the famous Stacie Mackenzie wearing her fabulous Izzy Camilleri number matching Jay sharply dressed in what I am sure was an Italian suit.

The Divas were all around him as he squeezes a moment just for me and Reel2Runway to tell us the inspiration behind his collection this season, followed by "Girl, why were you not at my casting?" We laughed and shared a great New York moment. I missed Ms. June Ambrose and her fashion chic turbans. But Jay looked like he had it all under control.

DAY 2 CONTINUED: MERCEDES BENZ START UP

My first season doing Double duty as not just a model but also as a fashion blogger ( now ready to openly admit it) I was so excited when I was invited to the coveted Mercedes Benz Start Up Competition. Then to get a news release update that the beautiful and sweet faced Canadian Supermodel Jessica Stam would be announcing the winner at this inaugural event.

I decided to do some research about this new segment addition to fashion week and it seemed to be a "can't miss event". After all, I was sitting amongst the veterans of Fashion coverage Derek Chetty of the Toronto Star and Rosey Edah of ET Canada.

Opening the Event was juror Jarrad Clark (the global production director for IMG Fashion; also a judge on Project Runway Australia) saying a few words about the new platform, an ongoing initiative to discover and support up-and-coming Canadian designers.

Finally I thought, someone who can really give Toronto Fashion the push it needs with a great collective effort of talented designers and supporters. But then I thought: how is this different than the shoWs or The New Labels shows? Mercedes Benz Support that's what!!!

After watching one collection grace the runway after the other, I finally could appreciate what it was really all about.

First it was Unttld (Montreal) a collection beautifully based on contrast as the video describes:" its hard, its soft, its rough, its smooth, its shiny, its matte..." and that it was as the models strolled down the runway, these garments were exactly as they were described. Total Contrast in every sense: from dark to light, from street to the gala, they gave silhouettes while keeping loose shapes.

Second Collection down the Runway :Travis Taddeo (Montreal) Streetwear meets luxury (memories of Kanye!) for the cool kids on the street. As the video said, “a girl and a guy walking through a desert looking for fun, in summer.” Great collection of real "Model Gear" super trendy and great for real life of a stylist yet careless rebelrouser.

Third Collection down the Runway was Family Denim Sensation Adam Taubenfligel and his siblings Mark and Ania for Triarchy (Vancouver). This was truly of "Denim etc. that goes from the back of a bike (the core business of the brand is building custom motorcycles) to the party, looking for fictional adventures" where Denim is the core of the outfit and its key that it moves to the curves of the body perfect and imperfect.

CD (Vancouver) by Cassie Dee was next and it was a surprisingly beautiful Western Canadian inspired collection with touches of tailored moments.

However, the final and closing Collection was very sweet. And I am sure even sweeter for winners Danielle Martin and Pao Lim for their collection Martin Lim (Montreal)

I truly experienced " The joyness of traveling, and optimism." when I watched this beautiful pink and periwinkle edged with black micro piping and layers of color-blocking flowed past me. It had signature dresses for day and night. off the shoulder Blouses untraditionally paired with pencil pants and french heels. it was very, LADY.

LGFW DAY 2:MY GIRL MICHI FASHION MANIC

The Michi Show was one of my favourites: Maybe because my Designer is a sister from the Islands just like me. Native Calgerian however a true Jamaican at heart, has shown her love for dance, comfort and flexibility in her own line MICHI.

Before launching MICHI, Michelle Watson designed for some of the world’s most reputable brands such as Donna Karan, Kate Spade and most recently, the luxury high performance athletic line, RLX Ralph Lauren. Michelle holds a degree in Fashion Design from Parsons School of Design in New York City, as well as an Honors Business Degree from The University of Western Ontario.

THE SUPERMODEL SHOT TO OPEN THE SHOW.....

Although MICHI is a brand out of New York, Michelle does all her manufacturing and creating right here in Toronto. This season she debuted her collection at LGFW S/S 2012 In the Studio where the Runway is just big enough for models to run a muck.

High Fashion Supermodel days inspired this collection. George Michael and Naomi Campbell where icons and Kate Moss and Tyra Banks were making their marks. It was about show, and lines, and sex. It was about loving every curve, every strand of hair on your head and reapplying lipstick even when you didn't need to because you never know when the cameras will snap a shot.

The girls were fierce, and with only 9 girls on rotation, the backstage was insane: Quick changes, arm bands, leg warmers and stilettos flying everywhere.... it was endless sprinting only to come out and shine like we have been dressed for hours.

This show had spice, it had beauty and it had old school runway charm. It even had models throwing off wigs from what I hear. LOL! (Embarassed face) And chairwoman of FDCC Robin Kay was there to catch it and all the action. Interactive shows are hard to come by these days.

DAY 1: LG FASHION WEEK w/JUMA

Jamil and Alia Juma are the brother and sister team behind Juma

This designer duo has been one of my favorites since they debuted their label JUMA in 2007 with their spring/summer collection at Toronto Fashion Week a show that maintained the label's forward momentum.

To date Juma Collection has been featured in prominent Canadian magazines like Fashion Magazine, FQ and Elle Canada, and is now selling at exclusive boutiques in New York and Japan. Los Angeles-based luxury retailer Fred Segal picked up a few pieces from both Juma (the luxury end) and Movement Juma (the more casual side of the label).

The Juma pair have invited back to walk for them this season of Spring 2012 shows and gave me an exclusive reel2runway behind the scenes interview, as well as all the backstage action on show day.

She has been noted as a very diverse and inspirational photographer often compared to noted photographer Steve Carty, who also has made his name photographing famous singers and rappers. However, Melissa, with her own feminine touch, has made her mark fusing fashion and music into one form.

I was very excited when Melissa and Editor in chief of online magazine http://www.bad-perm.com , Zoi Koutso, asked me to be apart of their project with Big It Up for their magazine launch date.

I, much like many other Canadians, famous or not, have grown up with Big It Up as not only part of my accessory closet but my go to spot for style inspiration and appreciation. Big It Up is a paramount name in the style culture here in Toronto and has been for the last 15 years.

Big it up hats have contributed to Canadian Lifestyle, Pop Culture, and Branding making it one of the most noted commercial brands in the Urban Market. Dameion Royes, owner, had a great vision to bring out the personality in each person who wears one through careful design and individual use of colors and textures that are sure to differ from the last.

Runway Shows are one of the most significant elements of the fashion industry. Especially in a market like Toronto, finding great creative ways to build an ever growing industry is paramount when creating Canada's Identity against many other and more established Fashion Markets. Paola Fullnerton of Paola Fullnerton Inc. sees that need and has produced many shows in the past with exemplary success. None quite those of The shOws however which exhibits presentation and collaborations from Canada's most sought after designers, models and artistry Talents from Coast to Coast.

As a model who has worked in the Toronto market for many years, I too have had the opportunity to work with Paola and I have never been short of amazed. She always encouraged me and gave much appreciation for my love of strutting her runway. With Paola, a model must model and a designer must deliver. So that the audience can fall in love with fashion over and over again.

This time, being on the other side of the runway, mainly in the front row seats of two grand shows held at Ritz Carlton in Toronto, I got to see what the shOws were all about and h0w Paola put this fabulous presentation together. Only the best of the best.

I was very excited to see models who can walk, clothes that swayed,cuts that defined and colours that stood in the lights beautifully as expressly seen in the collections by designers Jean-Pierre Braganza and Todd Lynn. I snuck backstage before and after the shows to see how Paola and her fabulous visionary artists put these collections together in a beautiful harmony of fashion and beauty on t he runway.

I was so different being there as just media and not walking but I was so happy to see what I have been missing from the other perspective all these years. I saw the workmanship in Lynn's blazers and the knitwear. I saw color blocking and textile design to die for in Braganza's Collection with each exit. Louboutin shoes at a fair 8 inches strutting back an d forth during dress rehearsals made easy during the show.

PAINT MY CANDY PLEASE: JESSGO AT 7 Continents 13/10/2011

Toronto-based Jessica Gorlicky is a local artist whose paintings reign amongst her peers in and out of the design industry for the last five years.

Her fan base and followers expends all across the country and continues to catch the eye and attention of art and design lovers everywhere. Gorlicky’s work is now showing in over 20 locations across Canada, including trendy restaurants, cafés, fashion boutiques, and art galleries.

Her own gallery and studio space, aptly named JessGo, in the north of Toronto, showcases her latest works on floor to ceiling canvases. Her latest collection of candy/cirque paintings is nothing short of colour cornucopia. He pieces are nothing short of expressive passionate, a bit rebellious and fun!

I have had the enormous pleasure of meeting and working with Jessica this past week whilst modeling in her 10,000 sq foot exhibition at the Seven Continents studios in Toronto. Models and dancers dressed in yummy candies undies, body painted from head to toe and picture perfect poses in bathtubs, center piece installations and picture frames as her painting dressed the perimeter from wall to wall. I was introduced to her by a great friend and supporter Gail Mcinnes of Megnet Creative.

Proudly this beautiful curly blond not only has looks, style individuality and imagination but a long list of accomplishments to go with it.

She recently sold one of her painting of Gordie Howe to private collectors for $15,000 and has been commissioned for live performance art across Canada by the likes of Coca-Cola, RBC, Cirque de Soleil, Vancouver Winter Olympics2010, Revlon, Holt Renfrew, Korhani at LG Fashion Week, Fiat, and CTV.

Crazy for Cydelic: BTS PICS for LGFW 2011

I first met Choyin Choi at his Birthday and collection Launch earlier this year. The event was hosted at C-Lounge in Toronto where the crew from Reel2Runway and I got to go out and enjoy a great night of installation models, food, a beautiful patio and all of hos close friends and colleagues. He was quiet and very reserved especially when asked to do an interview for us. His bright bleach blond hair and piercing blue eyes made him very noticeably but sweet and approachable too.

Choyin was very much celebrating in great spirits that night and had a stellar "washed Ashore" mini collection on 5 beautiful models to top of the nights fun features. Choyin worked the room and laughed it up with his friends. He was charming to his guests, sweet to his models and genius to those who came to celebrate his wonderful fashions and his special day.

This young Fashion Design graduate has a vision for couture lines, feminine silhouettes with futuristic inspiration that speak volumes. During the party segment of the night, we posed together for a photo and closed the night as new friends. His gracious smile only sealed my admiration for this young designer.

Now some months later, I got a message in my Facebook inbox from stylist extraordinaire, Joelle Litt, who requested me straight off the plane from New York to come and shoot a fabulous project for the Cydelic by Choyin Collections for 2011 LGFW. I immediately accepted of course. Two days later this Thanksgiving Monday, I arrived at the Seven Continents head Office where I met Shaun Marq, CEO of B.A.D PR and creative director of the shoot, Jason Banks for images, make up by Vancouver Import Blaire Petty for Judy Inc and of course Joelle on the accessories provided by Remix Clothing Canada. It was a fabulous team. No creative juice was spared. I was so ecstatic to be chosen as Choyin's new Muse for this Collection. Although its a big surprise and I cant ruin in before Fashion week, but it was definitely worth missing the turkey for.

By the end of the shoot Shaun and I were singing Deborah Cox off the Ipod and Choyin was half asleep from all his day and night preparation for the Collections at this season LGFW where he has asked me to open and close his show. I wish I could give you a bigger preview but I can only leak one. Hopefully you know the right people or Choyin himself, because this is going to be a HOT TICKET!

Manifesto Festival 2011 started out with a huge bang. Toronto's only Urban Celebration of art, music and black business symposiums. 11 days, 14 events and all of Canada's Finest come from all over to display their achievements and talents in a big way. I finally got my first Media Accreditation for Reel2Runway and what a first time it was. I got into the events rather late but I did get to see the "piece de resistance" which was the Red Bull Music Academy Culture Clash at the Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto. Four Sound Systems, four styles, and one Champion. Hailing from Glasgow, London, Montreal and New York

I got backstage access, full media coverage and a great time with some of the industries most wanted and accomplished: Afrika Bambaataa for Zulu Nation on Stage one, Toronto All-Stars on center stage (of course), and sharing stage three were Mad Decent and Lucky Me feat: just Blaze. Each team came out with a vengence.

Also hosted by the one-and-only Kardinal Offishall, the night was decorated with other star faces: Lindo P, T-Rexx, Michie Mee (big sis) and Dj Power to name a few. The night was magical as I stood on stage beside Dj Lissa Monet and crowd was going crazy. Lights, smoke and base speakers filled the room. It was one big party. From up there it was even better.

The last night of the Toronto International Film Festival. My good friend X, New Friend Broker and K-OS are having drinks at The Thompson Hotel Rooftop Password party after a hearty meal at Counter.

Some old friends and new joined us this evening: Jus RED, very old friend and looking JUS as young and beautiful as ever. One of Toronto's Most influential and recognized radio personalities in Canada has returned to the Big City to show what world travel life is all about. We got into some catch up-convo and some laughs about the old times. After a meal and some jabber with old friends we made our way up to the INVITE ONLY PASSWORD PARTY. Harvey Keitel was the password and even that was not enough. They were quite serious at the door but as usual we arrived right on time.

The party was jumping and K-OS by far was the best host I have ever met. Juno winner, artist extraordinaire and sometimes a Men's Style Icon with his own swag, was making moves all over then party filling up cups and making every single guest feel right at home.

We danced to old school, new school and everything in between. So nice to come together and celebrate eachother and meet great old and new friends.

"Burn It Down" TIFF Night 2: Neza Da Songbird Opens For Kelly Rowland???

I am blessed to present my best friend, and artist of the Reel2Runway show song Neza Da Songbird.

Not only is she my best friend but she is also an amazing, hardworking, talented beautiful young woman on the rise to the top in the music bizz. She already has released a full EP self entitled as well as currently working with groups like Untitled of DTP and showing all over Canada opening for artists like Quanche, and most recently a "no-show" Kelly Rowland.

Always on point my girl was decked out in a Grecian Bebe dress in army green with a belly cut side detail in yellow. She looked amazing! Hair done, Nails done everything did!

I went to support her at her opening for Kelly Rowland at the Empire Lounge in Yorkville. Celebs like Dru, Corey Niles and Cylenz came to support a fellow artist along with an entire fleet of an all-girl entourage.

But unexpectedly, miss Rowland could not attend and we did not get a show! That's the bizz, but Neza made up for it when she sang her heart out at 7 West after we left to go to breakfast: All 8 of us piled in a 6 place table as the songbird's voice was a float through the restaurant. She sang sweet harmonies to our friends that were there and no one missed miss Rowland anymore.

TIFF: Director X Marks the Spot...

A fabulous night at the ET Canada Party. Everyone in Fashion, Media and the Arts were there. All the movers and shakers in the city and even some move and shake all over the world. Some of Canada's finest talents and celebrities were out.

Director X makes A Grade

on my style list for that week. Not only is he a dashingly beautiful man, who dresses like an Armani model, but he is one of my dearest friends and mentors. I got my start in TV with Director X when he was better known as Lil X. One of the worlds most esteemed Music Video Directors to ever pick up an apple crate. He directed videos for such artists like: Dru Hill, Usher and many of Sean Paul's videos including "Get busy" where I landed my first principal role. Since moving to New York 2 years ago, he has been a great rock. I was escorted by him to ET Canada event at Spice Root in Toronto and it was all eyes on us. We had our own Runway moment while mixing and mingling with several long term friends and colleagues like: Arisa Cox, Traci Machlor of Cityline, Kardinal Offishall and many more.

It was a nice blast from the past. And some new friends in the making were also amongst the media fabulous. We definitely painted the town red that night.

CONTRA Mag: THREE YEARS AND COUNTING

Fresh from New York, I was ready to get back in the swing of things in Toronto.

Sunday Night was the TIFF jumpoff: To start off the week, I went to the FRENCH CONNECTION opening and I bumped into many old friends. The Gsus Sindustries crew, Aeroplane and the mastermind of Contra Mag Trung Hong. Trung and I have been friends since I was 16 years old just getting my start in the business. I modelled for him during the Urban Shows at Toronto Fashion week, styled by Madi Styles. Many of these people I still work with today. Trung however having started his own online magazine has been very busy and we only recently see each other now that I am back home. And so happy to see him I was. He invited me and every industry Hot Shot to the Third year Anniversary of CONTRA Mag. I was an unbelievable experience. It was much like the Damon Dash Museum in New York, only bigger:

Two screening walls, Grecian pillars cascading the 20 foot ceilings, Famous Photographers and their works covered the walls and the open bar with beautiful ladies gave service with a huge smile.

Trung and his team of wonderful creative directors are the consummate examples of what strength and determination get you in the big competitive business of fashion media.

October Issue shoot with Style By Halcyon Salon and Spa.

After shooting my Pilot Season of Reel 2 Runway with my usual look and having no success fu=inding an agency, I decided to just rebel and go for a totally new look.

I have been wanting to go blonde for a while, but I never imagined going this blonde. I wanted something fresh, new, edgy and something to match my personality. I decided to let genious himself, Mann Mann Nance turn my short tress into Super Platinum Hair Dress!

The Salon Tean at Halcyon Saks Fifth Avenue in Manhattan came together to do a hair story for the October Issue of Essence Magazine. This story was an 10 page editorial of hair extravagance! A full day at the salon with Master Colourist Danny Munoz, "The Cutter" and senior stylist Gretchen Trukenbrod, Master Stylist Mann Mann Nance. And that was just the hair.

Beating the beauty back with every brush strock and lip line were the amazing Victor Amos at www.makeupbyvictor.com and Damion Gerardo of Pure Management. Designs by the wonderful and telented Marco Hall and his team of expert stylists. Our accessory king Butch Jonhson, blinged us out with pieces designed by Adha Zelma Jewelry.

It was crazy at first because I went in black and came out cotton candy. LOL! The collour went pink on the ends, it was nuts. So I had to cut it off and now I am Amber Rose. I loved every minute of it.

Arriving at the shoot we were blessed to be shooting with the infamous Dallas Logan who is a great friend of mine and super talented lighting master. Of course we made magic together on the camera and even had a little moment for Reel2 Runway cameras.

DAY 2 In THE STUDIO was great! We laid the track down and I finally got to hear what I sound like on my own song. those who know me well know taht I have been singing in the shower for quite some time. Even on the occasional drunken night I may perform a song or two for my closest girlfriends. LOL! I simply never knew how hard it would be to emote all the attitude and feelings you get from a song when singing it into a microphone! I was hearing myself but it was so strange. I started thinking about what it would be like to sound like Adele, or Chrisette Michele, or even rap like Nicki Minaj or M.I.A. I wanted to be as great as they were yet maybe I speak too soon. It was cooler when I thought Autotune was save me. Not a chance. I had to really put my all into it. Not be afraid to look rediculous. As long as it sounded good.

The Lab team was more than encouraging and taught me a few tricks along the way. Five hours later and a 6am session closing, I got to see and feel what its like to be an artist of song. Its a lot of work. But definitely something I can't wait for all of you to hear.

Mount Vernon is crazy far from Brooklyn firstly. Secondly, Studio work is a very time-consuming process yet a very rewarding one. Now what was a long trek, is now an addiction. I finally got a chance to catch up with friends Dj Calli B, Sean D and Wild Fire, Producers of my new musical project. Can you imagine another slash title? LOL! I have always wanted to sing. I come from a long line of chorus line members. I have a real passion for singing but my stage fright has always gotten in the way. Believe it or not, strutting down a runway is much less nerve racking than singing in front of people.

I felt right at home with my friends and it was so much fun. We had some wine and a vibe that soothes the soul. In no time, i was rapping, singing and creating sound effects with my voice. It's like playing a character. It was so different than anything I have every done with modelling. I am really excited to see how it all comes out. Its exciting to express myself in such a whole new way. Stay tuned for Season 2 webisodes for all new and more Real Runway Renee.

June Ambros, Oscar James and Shaunna Miller. Wow! Who knew I would get in the door to see anyone from L'Oreal much less on a campaign for the biggest Black Hair product they have?

Just a few months ago I was beating pavement looking for an agency. To be honest I still am. I am very interested to find out a way to move forward now that this on every drug store and hair store shelf in America?

I asked my hairdresser in New York, Octavio Moore, who not too long ago brought my hair back from the dead, "wouldnt it be something if I actually got on a beauty or hair campaign? I mean my skin is acneic (although to most it wouldn't look like it) and struggle badly with tortured head sides... jeez I almost dont know why I put myself through this make up and hair drama everyday." And I went to those 5 castings and made the cut and now we laugh about it all the time. This may be my big break. I know one thing: I will never stop going to Octavio! LOL! Bitch gotta keep her hair on point. Next up is finding a miracle demotoloist. (smile)

Paris is Burning!

In my groove. I'm feeling good. I get a call 8:30am. “Renee, you booked the Hermes show and they want you right away for a fitting!”

It was the best news I had heard all month. I jumped out of my bed got ready faster than I ever had and bolted down to the Hermes Presse Offices where I strutted for the infamous Sybille. She is the casting director for Hermes and Gaultier. She she was sweet and fierce all in one. She is the type of woman who needs no last name. She says, "Jean-Paul will love you." "Jean-Paul, as i Jean-Paul Gaultier?" I was in awww!!! Jean-Paul Gaultier is only the most coveted designer in French Fashion, running mate to Galliano, now designs for Hermes. It was my dream to meet him. And homeboy loves him some Black girls too. LOL!

Shortly after, I landed a job with American Harper’s Bazaar (purely by fluke, as I thought it was just a Go-see) with photographer Jean-Paul Goude: who not only launched Grace Jones’ career, but was considered the photographic institution of Paris. Kind of like the iconic Bruce Weber, or Patrick Demarchelier.

Then, just when I think it can’t get better, Alber Elbaz, jet lagged from his flight from New York, comes in kissing cheeks, with his famous red bow tie and quirky Lanvin reading glasses. I couldn’t believe it!!! He thanked all 4 of us (the girls I mean) for coming. We were all supposed to play modern day Supremes. I was Mary Wilson of course!!! We wore his beautiful silk lamay dresses and 7 inches of heels that could make any man stutter. I t was like poetry. So much Soul Sexy was floating through that room when he was finished dressing us. It was Diva Feva' up in there.

It was a trip that changed my life. I made an example of myself and my agents so proud. I made more than enough money to cover my expenses, and a nice little shopping spree in Paris. I think I deserved it…

Fashion Week in Taipei: Stephane Dou show me!

This week has been crazy, chocked full of shows from: Benetton, to Chloe and this day I had Loewe as well as Taipei's most renowned designer, Stephane Dou.

It's 1:30 in the afternoon. With a models' bag in one hand and heels in the next I hail a taxi running towards it like my life depended on it. I was already late to my next show and I was frantic. I had been working since 8:00 in the morning doing the Loewe show at the infamous Taipei 101 towers. Of course with my luck, the show ran overtime and I was watching the clock in angst.

I was supposed to be at the Stephane Dou show by 1:00. I knew I was going to be late but I really had no choice.

Six outfits and all in great haste. As I walked off in my last outfit, closing the show I barely had time to do the promo shots after the show with he rest of the models. Camera men were running after me down the escalators all the way outside. One camera man took a picture of me losing my shoe as I looked frantically for a taxi. It was a taste of paparazzi I had never had.

I hopped in the cab and past the driver the paper with the address and I was on my way! I got to the show venue where Stephane's show was. Number 2 Pape avenue had a line up of spectators that seemed like it went for miles.

Again, cameras and men screaming for a picture followed me all the way to the dressing area. Word gets around fast in Taipei. And being the only Black girl to be doing his show ever, I attracted quite a bit of attention. Stephane was sweating by the time I got there.

Luckily for me the make up from the other show was pretty much the same as the look for Stephan's show. And I have no hair so I was ready to go.

It was the hottest day of my trip. I was sweating and I was dieing of thirst. With a guzzle of a bottle of water and some hairspray, I was out on that runway and walking with my stilettos and insoles practically stitched to my instep.

No one seemed to have a clue when a very pleased crowd and Stephane, relieved of course, applauded for my walk. It was a 400 foot runway. I was strutting, but I was scared. After the show camera men and TV stations stole pics of me backstage. I met one reporter named Rachel who was a guest celebrity in the show. She spoke English and was very good at keeping it short and sweet. She translated a little bit for me to the other reporters too.

The best part was seeing all my roommates who came to see my show. They took my bags and shoes and relieved me of the weight from all my nicks knacks. It was great seeing them. They all called me a SUPERMODEL.

It was the only recognition I needed. Thanks guys...

MY FIRST JOB IN TAIPEI!!!!

By George the booking was in: I got it! My first job in Taipei... and it's the biggest catalogue in the country.

The call came in around 11:00 at night at the models' apartment. I was surprised to hear my head booker Jessie on the other end. She said, "Darling...." in a super cute Asian accent, she continued, "... you got the Benetton job and they want you to do the cover as well! Isn't that great?" Of course I was very excited. Then she goes on to say, "... but they are only willing to pay the basic rate."

I was conflicted, but being the strictly for principal I am I said no. I was not about to lower my rate no matter how new to their market I was. Needless to say the next day when she replied to them with my refusal, the Benetton clients were not pleased.

"There goes my first booking," I thought to myself.

To my surprise, about a week later the Benetton client called back and wanted to still book me. Of course Jessie reiterated that I was not willing to work for less than $20,000. They were stubborn about it at first, but after careful consideration, the confirmation sheet was signed and sealed with my special rate... and home girl was on set the next day: Jumping, doing cartwheels and splits all over the set. Colours and streamers... lights and cameras. Chinese hurrays and signs of awwww floated all over the studio. It was soooo much fun. The most I have had a t a job in a long time.

I worked at full speed for a full 10 hours. One outfit after another... one pose after another. And 200 outfits later, I was done, and the clients were ecstatic.

So was I when I finally got the catalogue in my hand. Posters and catalogues across Taipei city with my face on the front. It was amazing. Not only was I the first Black model to ever get a catalogue in Taipei of that prestige but the first to be on the cover.

I was glad I stuck to my guns most of all. It's a lot of work, but I always put in my best beginning to end. And that is what I did.

Great start to an amazing journey.

“Runway Diva?” Me? “You were fierce, girl!” Who me? Sometimes I sit back after a big show rush backstage, and wonder to myself, “When did I even get here? What does all this mean?” People passing to and from saying, “ You worked that runway like nobody’s business, good job!” and pats on the back all over the place.
Like huh?

At this time a rumor had been going around that I was "The girl to Watch" for the upcoming Couture season in Paris and I hadn't even gotten picked up by an agency yet... GEEZE. The pressure.

I did Toronto Fashion Week and the home crowd was a roar when I walked out. It was crazy, but I felt like a supermodel already. It was more so when I had done the G-Sus show and Mr. Perez Hylton was visiting the venue that night.

And lucky for me he loved him some Renee, because we all know how he can tare anyone apart? After that show, a friend of mine brings me to meet him as I he had requested. "Perez Hylton wants to meet me?" With cameras, people all around, and publicists everywhere, the energy was high. He greeted me by saying, "Girl, you slipped a little on that runway and you still are the baddest walker I have ever seen... Period. You need to know I don't like very many models, but you got it!" And as surprised as I was to hear that, I really was equally flattered. He then asked me take a picture with him.

The next day, I had a shoot with Maddie Styles for Cream Magazine. I was in the studio, sitting and wondering to myself, "When did a little clumsy, 15-year-old girl, bucktoothed to buckwheat to boot, go from awkward Renee to Runway Renee?"

As I remind myself of my dreams and how so much has changed “Déjà vu” from the B-Day Album is playing in the background, and I feel like I am in a déjà vu. And now here I am, on a job for Cream Magazine, lost once again in these same thoughts, wondering “Who woulda’ thunk?”

I start to think, "Can I really make it? Can I really go all the way?"

It's a New Me: Time for a New Plan!

After Toronto Fashion Week and a much needed break from all the intense traveling, Norwayne and I put our heads together: With a new book, a new body and a new attitude, we said the only obvious choice for my next journey was: Paris.

We knew we had our work cut out for us. We fought tooth and nail through all the rejections by the agencies, but we had had just about enough of the “She isn’t right for us’” we could stand.

Finally, Crystal Model Agency said “Yes’.

The catch however was that I had to pay my own way: my own flight, my own apartment, my own everything.

But as the song goes, “I ain’t neva’ scared.” So I went, and I knew as long as I was there it was better than not being there at all.

So ultimately I was invited to make my Paris debut for Couture Fashion Week in July. Which meant I only had 3 weeks to get my ass in tip top shape to really get the agency behind me 100%. I wanted to have a Supermodel to show them when I arrived. It was my way of showing them I was as serious about them as they were about me. And that I did.

When July came around, I was wearing a size 2 with ease: slipping my 34.5 inch hips into my Wonder woman tights with not a pound to spare. And I am a girl who loves her food, so you know that was hard.

I got to Paris and as soon as I got off the plane they had me on castings and ready to go. For the first 4 days, I was exhausted, 10lbs lighter, beating the cobblestone and busting down casting doors-even sneaking into a few. LOL!!!

Time to burn Paris the fuck down!

I Dream of Jeanne!!!

Ring! Ring! Ring! My cell phone goes off at what seems like the crack of dawn to me, but it's already 9:30 am. Norwayne is on the other end, screaming at me to get a pen and paper. " Renee, you've got a very important casting with FQ magazine and they need a beauty girl," he goes on to say. Still wiping the sleep out of my eye, I scurry around for my date book and a pen.

"...so your call time is between 11:00 am to 6:00pm. The address is 134 Peter street, top floor. You are going to see Abel and Bob." Jotting it all down I was kind of shocked to be getting the opportunity to even see these people much less actually be a potential for a beauty shoot. Yikes!!! "oh... and one more thing..." he says, "... they said they don't want to see you but I am sending you anyways."

If I could describe to you what was going through my mind at that point, I was hurt, annoyed, and determined all at the same time. He then went on to explain, " They asked for our best beauty models and girls who have travelled and although a black girl wasn't what they had in mind, I thought you were the best suited for it, so just so you know going into this."

I paused for a very long time, he almost thought I had hung up. LOL!! But after I thought about it for a minute, I figured the worst thing that could happen is they say no and kick me out. The best thing that could happen on the contrary, is they could love me and I get a shoot in one of the biggest North American publications out there. So I said, "Ok, I will be there with bells on."

I made my way downtown for 5:30pm. Working up the nerves to do this takes a long time you know? I marched upstairs in my stilettos, with my portfolio in hand and short black dress to boot. I was determined to make it count.

Abel was there to greet me, a little surprised, I suppose as they were not expecting me, but still very pleasant. He walked me into a room where he sat me down, talked to me about my travels and wondered through my my book over and over. He called Bob into the room and he was also very welcoming but surprised. I explained to them that I knew I wasn't asked to come but that I was excited to be a part of this shoot and that if they picked me I would give them FEVA'!!! (fever).

I guess the deciding factor was that of the infamous Jeanne Becker. I almost cry every time I think of they way she embraced my style of beauty and welcomed me openly to this opportunity. I felt like I was on American Idol, when they all said "Yes!"

Shoot Day: Minus degree weather and dressing in a Budget truck in a Greenhouse parking lot. But it was amazing. I was wearing Yojhi, Stella, Gucci, Valentino... ah huh. I was nervous because Jeanne was on set but she encouraged me all the way. I told her I wanted her job when I retire, and she just laughed.

With a hug she said, " Girl that won't be for a long time. You have got plenty left in there.

That meant the world to me.

Coming Home...

I wish I could say I wasn't going to miss Africa, but I knew I was well overdue for some of mom's good ol' Jamaican home cooking. Mmmmm!!!!!

I was waiting in Heathrow Airport in London for 11 hours to connect from an already long flight to Dubai from Johannesburg. I was a mess. I called my "used to be boyfriend" in hopes he could help me pass the time. We chatted about the time I was getting in and how much we missed each other and how we couldn't wait to see each other.

Here comes the fun part: I had no idea I was only setting myself up to come home to the biggest nightmare ever.

We had a great relationship. He supported me in all my dreams to be a big time model. He was close to my family... and for reasons needless to say, his name alone use to make me feel like a little girl in a candy store. His name... we won't mention. "But you know who you are?" I am just keeping it real. Anyways, I went from excited to heart-shattered. He was cheating on me. For months...

Sure I can talk about it now because I am over it, but what a lot of people would never know from my pictures and my runway shows is that I have ever experienced this type of heartbreak and disappointment. They always say "... a girl like you can have any man you want!" or " ... who would cheat on you... you're a supermodel??" And you know what I said before now, " Sure. I buy it!" Now I say "Bullshit!!!" Pardon my French. People think that the fancy lifestyle and big VIP parties are all fun and games. They think that is all I need in life. But not only is the work the hard part, but the sacrifice too.

My relationship, for example: When I decided to get on that plane, he decided I was long gone. It's important that people understand, I sacrifice my friendships, my personal relationships on the daily for what I do. My not being around a lot of the time plays a big role in the preservation or lack thereof in my relationships and my commitment to them.

Not that I am blaming myself, but I realise now I made a choice and that can affect a lot of other things that are dear to me. What I learned is that the parties, and cute guy models and nice compliments don't make up for the real friends and loved ones that stick by me. I also learned that if someone really loves you they will understand.

The truth is: models have it rough and we do get lonely. We too get cheated on sometimes. Looks have nothing to do with it. But it's just one of the sacrifices we make for this business.

Hopefully, we find comfort in the excitement of it all, and knowing we have a whole world open to us to find real friends and companionship. A long shot, yes, but impossible, no. I am grateful to have my loving mom and brother, my girls, my boys, and everyone in between who sticks it out with me every time. I miss them so much. And they love and miss me.

I love what I do, but I am always happy to come home.

After all these years, I thought I had reached my full potential. However, something had changed: I was getting older.I was doing really well, my catalogue work made lots of money!!! But I wanted more.

So today, after all, I decided I couldn’t take it anymore. I called up my friend Snowdon, crying and wailing about how unhappy I was with the stagnancy of my career. He says to me, “… you know what enough is enough. Meet me downtown, today at 5pm. I am tired of this. You about to give mean ulcer and yourself one too.”We met up downtown. We walk into an office at 49 Spadina Ave. and I see a great, long time friend and mentor… Norwayne Anderson.

I ask him, “What in the world are you doing here?”“This is my agency!” he replies. As simple as you read it is as simple as he said it.I never knew that after all these years, this man owned NAM models, which by the way was and still is one of the biggest and most heavily connected agencies internationally ever in Toronto.

Nam was alays the top secret vessel (figuratively speaking..) of all the agencies in Toronto. And I was about to ride all the way to stardom, and Norwayne, my friend, and mentor was going all he way with me.I looked around and saw pictures of his supermodels like Andrew Stetson on the wall- who has done everything from Levis to Calvin Klein. Milan Krouzsil from YSL, Kimberlyn Paris from J Crew. And I wanted to be next.So began the journey of my new path.It took but two weeks and finally a new outlook to finally get on the plane to of all places: Johannesburg, South Africa. So I'm in South Africa. I'm so excited! in to be here! How can this get any better? I'm booked for a 5-day job in Sun City for an AIDS benefit/concert with none other than Seal. OH MY GOSH!!!!It was great. Great hotels, awesome group dinners, and beautiful black girls everywhere I looked. To be somewhere where all the girls looked like me was amazing. How It All Came to be

Sometimes I sit backstage after a big show, and wonder to myself, “How did I even get here? What does all this mean?” People passing to and from saying, “You worked that runway like nobody’s business, good job!” and pats on the back astound me.They call me “runway diva” and say that “I was fierce”. And I’m like, huh..who, me?I wonder, when did this clumsy, little 15-year-old girl, with buckteeth go from awkward to Runway model? I ponder this as I sit backstage, and listen to the Déjà vu song from the B-Day album playing in the background. Perfect timing because I feel like I’m experiencing some form of déjà vu. I mean here I am, on another job for a nationally distributed magazine thinking “Who woulda’ thunk it? ”

I was only 15-years-old, when I met my future agent. As I was wandering around Oakville Place Mall, minding my own business this man-who I thought at the time was some creep- came up behind me and started asking me odd questions like, “How old are you? How long are your legs?” Little did I know that this man I labeled as a creep was actually uber agent and scout, Elmer Olsen, who was there hosting the 1999 Elite model Look contest.Next thing I knew, , my name was taken down on an entry form, and I was taking headshots so that I could compete against other girls from all over the GTA.

They definitely didn’t waste much time . This was just the beginning of my unpredictable journey into the modeling world. The next two weeks were full of assigned appearances and flashing cameras.I was one of twelve girls from all over Ontario, roaming the streets of Toronto and hitting up every hot spotin the city. We had fun going to places that pretended we were old enough to get in LOL, one of the perks of being a model.Each of us was competing to go to Paris. I felt like I was in some kind of reality TV show. Although, I didn’t win and therefore couldn’t go to Paris, I landed a NEW FACE shoot in Toronto for Life Fashion and started my career as a model.
